More Dunlap Historical Photos

 

The Old School House was located at the northeast corner of Route 91, which is Fourth Street in Dunlap.  It was built in 1899 and all grades held classes in this building. 

 

(Photo 1).  Charles Missen is holding hands with his daughters Grace and Elva in front of the Charles Missen Blacksmith Shop.  The shop was located on Birch Street near the site of the current Dunlap Bank Building.

(Photo 2.)  Charles Missen is pictured at his anvil in his shop.  His brother, William Missen is near the wheel in the background.  The shop was established in 1898.

 

This picture shows the northwest corner of Second and Birch Streets.  McCraw & Stotler Groceries, Drugs, and Men's Furnishing Goods occupied the other side of the First Floor of the building.

 

Gus Hall -- Dunlap's Mail Carrier

 

Jackson Opera House - Located on Second Street on the site of the present Post Office.  The building was used for graduation exercises, basketball games, skating, and plays.  This photo shows the congregation of St. Rose Catholic Church which held mass in this building following the burning of the Church in 1909.

 

Holmes-Ashbaugh Hardware Store - "Milwaukee Days" Celebration.  Located on Railroad Street (First Street) across from the present grain elevator.  The Modern Woodsmen of America Hall is located on the Second Floor above the hardware store.  The Dunlap City Band is in the foreground.

John Stiegle's Market - Located on Railroad Street (First Street) next to Kuhn Hardware, across from the present grain elevator.  Sold flour, mill feeds and barrel salt, shoes, hosiery, ladies and gentleman's furnishings.  Burned in 1924.  First store building build in Dunlap - Completed October 1871 by Dr. John Gillette.

 

William Poplett, Proprietor.  Soda, ice cream, confectionary, tobacco, and cigars.  Ice cream parlor on left, bath and rooming house in center, and grocery on right.  Located on Second Street, north of present Post Office.  Present use "Schaffer's Apartments".

 

Jeanette Yates, Postmistress.  Notions were sold in portion of building (right of photo).  Located at northeast corner of Second and Birch Streets, present location of Moffatt Insurance Office.

 

Erected in 1882 on the south edge of Dunlap, fairgrounds consisted of permanent buildings, a quarter mile race track, a band stand, two ticket gates, and a bleachered baseball diamond.  Alva Dunlap's "Old Brick" in the background.

 

St. Rose Catholic Church - Established in 1879, the building was struck by lightening in 1909 and replaced with a new brick building later known as St. Clement's Catholic Church.

 

Prospect Presbyterian Church - Celebrated Centennial on June 12, 1950.  No longer standing, church was located on northwest corner of Third and Birch (B) Streets, behind present Pioneer Junior High School Gymnasium.

 

Dunlap Methodist Church - Built in 1885.  Located at northwest corner of Third and Walnut Streets.
